QuestionAnswer
Matter Anything that takes up space and has mass.
Mass A measure of the amount of matter contained in a physical body.
Volume The space that something takes up.
Solid Particles close together.
Liquid Particles still close together but not in fixed positions.
Gas Particles spread out
Physical Property A property that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance.
Chemical Property A property that can only be observed by changing the identity of the substance.
Atom Smallest unit of matter
Atomic Number Number of protons in an atom of a given element
Atomic Mass Number of protons plus the number of neutrons in an atom
NUCLEUS center of the atom that has the protons and neutrons (heaviest part of the atom)
PROTON positive subatomic particle in the nucleus
NEUTRON neutral subatomic particle in the nucleus
ELECTRON negative subatomic particle that is around the outside of the nucleus
malleability ability to be flattened into a sheet; bendable
ductility ability to be stretched into a wire
reactivity ability to react with another substance

period horizontal rows on periodic table
groups vertical columns on periodic table
melting point temperature where solid turns to liquid
boiling point temperature where liquid turns to gas
metal shiny, good conductors, malleable, ductility
metalloid like both metal and non-metal, shiny, malleable, semi-conductors

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
