1906 Federal Food and Drug Act Enacted to stop the sale of inaccuratley labeled drugs
1914 Harrison Narcotic Act Enacted because of the excessive number of opium addicts in the US
1938 Food, Drug, And Cosmetic Act Enacted because the earlier Food and Drug Act was not worded strictly enough and did not include cosmetics; all controlled substances were required to be labeled "Warning: May be habit forming"
1951 Durham-Humphrey Admendment Added more instructions for drug companies and required the labeling "Caution: Federal law prohibits dispensing without a prescription
1962 Kefauver-Harris Admendments Enacted in 1962 in an attempt to ensure the safety and effectiveness of all new drugs on the market (In Europe women who had taken thlidomide while pregnant gave birth to children with severe defects including the absence of limbs)
1970 Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act Formed to enforce the laws concerning controlled substances and their distribution
1983 Orphan Drug Act Allowed drug companies to bypass the lenghthy time requirements of testing a new drug and the costs that accompanied them to provide a medication to persons who had a rare disease
1987 Prescription Drug Marketing Act Required the labeling "Caution: Federal laws restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian
1990 Anabolic Steriods Control Act Helped stiffen regulation on the abuse problems on anabolic steroids and their misuse by athletes
1990 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA 90) States that a pharmacist must offer to counsel (at the time of purchase) all patients who receive new prescriptions
