QuestionAnswer
Define Astronomy. The study of the universe is called astronomy.
What is the meaning of the word atmosphere? The life-giving gaseous envelope that surrounds Earth is the atmosphere.
What is a biosphere? The biosphere is concentrated near the surface in a zone that extends from the ocean floor up to the atmosphere, containing all life on Earth.
Define closed system. A closed system is a self-contained system with regard to matter, like a car's cooling system.
What is a core? The dense inner sphere of planet Earth is called the core.
What is the scientific definition of crust? The light, very thing outer skin of Earth is called the crust.
Define Earth Science. Earth Science is the name for all of the sciences that collectively seek to understand Earth and its neighbors in space. This includes geology, oceanography, astronomy, and meteorology.
Define Earth System Science. The aim to study Earth as a system composed of numerous interacting parts (subsystems)is called Earth System Science. This science must be preformed in order for us to more fully understand our planet and how the individual parts are connected.
What is an environment? An environment is everything that surrounds and influences an organism.
What is geology? Geology means "the study of Earth"
Define hydrosphere. The hydrosphere is the dynamic mass of liquid that is continually on the move, evaporating from the ocean to the atmosphere, precipitating to the land and running back to the ocean again.
What is a hypothesis? A hypothesis is an untested explanation for something.
What is lithosphere? The lithosphere is the rigid outer layer that includes the crust and upper mantle.
Define mantle. Mantle is the middle layer of Earth, less dense than the cor but more dense than the crust.
What is the definition of meteorology? Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather and climate.
What is a model? A synonym for hypothesis that is a less precise term is a model
What does the nebular hypothesis suggest? The nebular hypothesis suggests that the bodies of our solar system form an enormous rotating cloud called the solar nebula, composed mostly of hydrogen and helium.
What is a negative feedback mechanism? A negative feedback mechanism is a mechanism that resists change to stabilize a system
What is a nonrenewable resource? A nonrenewable resource is a recourse that take millions of years to accumulate so once they are mined or pumped from the ground, they are no more.
Define oceanography. Oceanography involves chemistry, physics, geology, and biology. It includes the stufy of the composition and movements of seawater, sea floor topography and marine life.
What is the definition of open system? In an ope system both energy and matter flow in and out of the system.
What is a paradigm? A paradigm explains a large number of interrelated aspects of the natural world.
Define physical environment. The physical environment is the water, air, soil, rock and conditions. (temperature)
What is the meaning of the word system? A system is and size group of interacting parts that form a complex whole.
What is a positive feedback mechanism? A positive feedback mechanism is a mechanism that enhances or drives change.
What is a renewable resource? A renewable resource can be replenished ina short amount of time.
What is a theory? A theory is a hypothesis that has survived extensive scrutiny and when competing models have been eliminated.
