---|---|
What is astronomy | The study of the universe. Because Earth is related to all other objects in space, it is very helpful in probing the origins in our own environment. |
What is the atmosphere | One of the main things that allows us to live on planet Earth; a gaseous layer that surrounds the planet. Without it, many of the processes and interactions that make the surface such a dynamic place would not occur. |
What is the biosphere | It contains all of life on Earth. It is gathered close to the surface in a zone witch extends from the ocean floor upward for several kilometers into the atmosphere. |
What is a closed system | A self-contained system with regard to matter. A car's cooling system is an example of one. No matter enters or leaves a one, although, energy moves freely in and out of one. |
What is the core | A dense inner sphere; one of the three principle regions lying beneath the atmosphere and ocean. |
What is the crust | The light and very thin outer layer of the Earth. It is its thinnest beneath the ocean, and its thickest where continents exist. |
What is Earth Science | The name for all sciences that collectively seek to understand Earth and its neighbors in space. It includes the studies of geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy. |
What is Earth system science | The attempt to study Earth as a system made of numerous subsystems, rather than looking through the limited lens of only one of the traditional sciences. |
What is an Environment | It refers to everything that surrounds and influences an organism. Some social, some biological, and others non-living. |
What is geology | It simply means "study of Earth". It is traditionally divided into two areas, being physical and historical. Physical examines the materials composing Earth. Historical is to understand the origin of Earth. |
What is the hydrosphere | All the water on Earth's surface, such as oceans and lakes, and even water off the surface that has been evaporated into the atmosphere. |
What is a hypothesis | An untested explanation for how or why things happened in the manner observed. It's made once facts have been gathered and principles have been formulated to describe a natural phenomenon. |
What is the lithosphere | The rigid outer later that includes the crust and uppermost mantle. |
What is the mantle | One of the three principle regions of the earth, and is less dense than the core. |
What is meteorology | The study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather and climate. |
What is a model | It is usually used as a synonym for the word hypothesis, but actually is a less precise term because it is sometimes used to describe a scientific theory as well. |
What is the nebular hypothesis | It suggests that the bodies of our solar system evolved from an enormous rotating cloud called the solar nebula |
What are negative feedback mechanisms | They work to maintain the system as it is, or to "maintain the status quo" |
What is a nonrenewable resource | A resource in which the processes that create them are very slow and take millions of years to accumulate. |
What is oceanography | It includes the study of the composition and movements of seawater, as well as coastal processes, seafloor topography, and marine life. |
What is an open system | A system in witch both energy and matter flow into and out of the system. |
What is a paradigm | A theory that is extensively documented and held with a very high degree of confidence. It explains a large number of interrelated aspects of the natural world. |
What is the physical environment | It includes water, air, soil, and rock, as well as conditions such as temperature, humidity, and sunlight. |
What is are positive feedback mechanisms | Mechanisms that enhance or drive change. |
What is a renewable resource | A resource that can be replenished over relatively short time spans. |
What is a system | Any size group of interacting parts that form a complex whole. |
What is a theory | A well-tested and widely accepted view that the scientific community agrees best explains certain observable facts. |
