Atoms
Unit 2 Atoms
Question | Answer |
---|---|
atom | The smallest particle of an element. |
proton | A positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom with a mass of 1 a.m.u. It determines the identity of the atom. |
neutron | A particle in the nucleus of an atom with no charge and has a mass of 1 a.m.u. |
electron | A negatively charged particle that flies around the nucleus of an atom that has almost no mass. |
nucleus | The positively charged center of an atom. This is where almost all of the atom's mass is located. |
valence electron | The electrons located farthest from the nucleus that determines how chemically reactive the atom will be. |
electron cloud | The area outside the nucleus of an atom where the electrons fly. |
atomic number | The number of protons in an atom. This determines the atom's identity. |
mass number | The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom. |
neutral | Having no electric charge; not positive or negative. |
neutral atom | Atoms have no electrical charge because they have the same number of electrons (-) and protons (+). |
ion | An atom that has lost or gained an electron and now has an electrical charge (+ or -) |
