Earth layers vocabulary

termdefinition
continental drift the slow movement of the Earth's continental and oceanic plates
convection current the large circular currents in the mantle that help the Earth's plates "float"; caused by changes in temperature
plates rigid blocks of the Earth's crust and upper mantle
core the center of the Earth, composed mostly of iron
crust the solid, outer layer of the Earth
inner core the center of the Earth, thought to be made of a solid spherical core
mantle the thick middle layer of the Earth between the crust and the core
outer core the part of the center of the Earth, thought to be liquid, that surrounds the solid inner core
Pangaea name given a "supercontinent" that formed 200 million years age and included all the land masses known to be on Earth at that time
fossil the actual remains, petrified remains, carbon traces, or molded impressions of plants and animals that have been preserved, usually in rocks
