| phase | any region with a uniform set of properties |
| heterogenous mixture | mixture that is composed of more than one phase |
| interfaces | definite boundries that separate the different phases in a heterogenous mixture |
| homogenous | materials that consist of only one phase |
| solution | homogenous matter that is composed of more than one material |
| solute | dissolved material in a solution |
| solvent | dissolving material in a solution |
| substances | materials that are homogenous and always have the same composition |
| elements | substances that are composed of only one kind of atom |
| compounds | substances composed of more than one kind of atom |
| organic substances | compounds taht contain the element carbon |
| inorganic substances | elements and the compounds of all elements other than carbon |
| physical change | when the same substanec remains after the change |
| chemical change | when a new substance forms from after a change |
| precipitate | when a solid substance forms from a solution |
| physical property | description of the behavior of a substance udergoing a physical change |
| chemical property | describes the behavior of a substance undering a chemical change |
| extensive properties | depend on the amount of matter present |
| intensive properties | do not depend on the amount of matter present |

| heat | energy transferred as a result of temperature difference |
| joule | derived SI unit rather than a base unit |
| endothermic | reaction when energy is absorbed |
| exothermic | reaction when energy is given off by a reaction |
| activation energy | minimum amount of energy for endothermic and exothermic reactions to start |
| calorimeter | device used to measure the energy given off or absorbed during chemical or physcial changes |
