Computer Applications Vocabulary Words
Hardware | What makes up a comuter |

Login | To make a computer system or network recognize you so that you can begin a computer session |
Network | A group of two or more computer systems linked together. |
Internet | A global network connecting millions of computers. |
Cursor | A special symbol, usually a solid rectangle or a blinking underline character, that signifies where the next character will be displayed on the screen. |
Icon | A small picture that represents an object or program. |
Hardware | Refers to objects that you can actually touch, like disks, disk drives, display screens, keyboards, printers, boards, and chips. |
Software | Computer instructions or data. |
Tower | Refers to a computer in which the power supply, motherboard, and mass storage devices are stacked on top of each other in a cabinet. |
Keyboard | The set of typewriter-like keys that enables you to enter data into a computer. |
Mouse | A device that controls the movement of the cursor or pointer on a display screen. |
Monitor | Another term for display screen. |
Printer | A device that prints text or illustrations on paper |
Speakers | An electro-acoustic transducer that converts electrical signals into sounds loud enough to be heard at a distance. |
Hard Drive | The mechanism that reads and writes data on a hard disk. |
Floppy Drive | Short for floppy disk drive (FDD), a disk drive that can read and write to floppy disks. |
CD ROM | a polycarbonate with one or more metal layers capable of storing digital information |
Flash Drive | A small, portable flash memory card that plugs into a computer’s USB port and functions as a portable hard drive |
Scanner | A device that can read text or illustrations printed on paper and translate the information into a form the computer can use. |
Digital Camera | A camera that stores images digitally rather than recording them on film. |
Digital Projector | A device that projects an image from a computer onto a screen. |
File Server | A computer or device on a network that manages network resources. |
