Check your understanding on data information and knowledge

What is Data? are raw facts and figures. On its own it has no meaning. It may be inputted and stored in a computer.
What is Information? Information is processed data. Information has a context which makes it meaningful. Computers output information.
What is Knowledge? Knowledge is derived from information by applying rules to it i.e. it is what you get when you interpret information.
What is Encoding Data? Encoding means to replace data with short codes
Give an example of Encoding Data? Male/Female encoded as M/F.<br> Blue/Red encoded as B/R
Give 5 advantages of Encoding Data? Less storage space is required - saves memory<br> Faster manual input <br> Less chance of transcription errors<br> Greater consistency of data<br> Comparisons are shorter thus speeding up searches
Give 2 disadvantages of Encoding Data? The precision of the data may be coarsened through value judgments.<br> The user needs a list of valid codes and their meanings to understand the encoding
What is a Value Judgement? A value judgement is a matter of opinion rather than fact.
Give an example of a Value Judgement Example: the following data may be collected on a dating agency form - I am: handsome / good looking / average / ugly.
