Civil Liberties Those rights guaranteed to the individual by the Constitution and, more specifically, the Bill of Rights
Direct Democracy A type of democracy in which all citizens participate in political life and decision-making
Electoral College The 538 electors-men and women-who actually elect the president in their respective states after the popular votes have been cast. A maajority(270 votes) is needed for victory.
Plea Bargaining A legal tactic that allows a defendant to plead guilty in exchange for a lesser sentence
Representative Democracy A democracy in which the people elect representatives who, in turn, make political policies and decisions
Self-Incrimination The fifth Amendment protection that states that an individual cannot be compelled to testify against him or herself
Front-Loading Refers to the states moving their caucuses and primaries to an earlier date
Poll Tracking The polling technique whereby voting groups are surveyed almost continuously during a campaign in order to detect rapid shifts in opinions and attitudes
Exit Polls Polls that are based on questioning individuals after they have left voting booths on election dat. The responses can allow TV networks to make early predictions regarding candidate winners or losers
Swing Voters Voters who change party loyalties periodically, rather than staying exclusively with that candidates of any party
Common Law Judge-made law; those rules that have been created by judges through their decisions in numerous cases
Dealignment The process whereby voters and public officials experience a decline in loyalty and attachment to the two major political parties
Lobbyist A paid representative of an interest group who tries to influence the policy decisions and views of a public offical
Ex Post Facto Laws Laws that retroactively make an earlier non-crimminal act a crime
Independent Voters Voters whose allegiance to the main political parties is relatively weak or virtually nonexistent
