Database Unit Vocabulary

database program a computer application that, similar to an electronic filing cabinet, enables users to organize and to locate information with ease
Datasheet View a method of displaying all of the records contained in a database table
e-mail the use of the global telephone network to send messages from one computer to another
e-mail address a series of letters or numbers that identifies the location of an individual’s mailbox within a telecommunications network
extension a period and three letters added to the end of a filename that indicate the computer application in which the document was created
field in a database table, a column of information about a single topic
field name the heading at the top of each column that explains what information is contained in each field
filter a database function that displays only those records that match specific information in one or more fields
Find function a component of the computer’s operating system that allows users to locate documents stored in an unknown folder
form in contrast to a table, this view allows users to locate and to enter information in a database one record at a time
hypertext words and graphic images that can be selected to access another Web page
Internet an international network of computers and telephone lines that enables schools, government agencies, universities, businesses and individual users to share information
modem a computer component that converts information received through telephone lines into a format that can be understood by the CPU, and vice-versa
multimedia encyclopedia a cd-rom that uses text, pictures and sound to present information on a wide range of topics
query a special database feature that enables users to perform mathematical functions, such as sums and averages
record in a database table, a row containing related information from each field
report a database feature that allows information to be organized in a format that is more suitable for printing and distributing
search engine a program that enables users to locate Web pages by entering one or more words that describe the subject about which they need information
sort a database function that organizes information in alphabetical or numerical order
telecommunications the transmission of information, whether by voice or by computer signals, over the global network of telephone lines
Web browser the software that enables users to employ the features of the World Wide Web to access information on the Internet
World Wide Web a system of linked Internet documents that are organized similar to a spider’s web
