Phrasal verbs - out (1): discovering, finding sth

QuestionAnswer
One way to learn phrasal verbs is by organizing them by particles. The particles which appear with phrasal verbs often have their own general meaning, which can help you understand the meaning of the whole verb.
'Out' in some combinations gives the idea of searching for and then finding something, such a fact, a piece of information, the answer to a difficult question, etc.
try sth <-> out ----- [your new bike, a new method] to use sth such as a method or piece of equipment in order to find out if it works or is good
turn out to be/have ----- [The house they had offered us turned out to be a tiny apartment.] ----- [Ruth's illness turned out to be serious after all.] ----- [The guy turned out to be Maria's cousin.] to be discovered to be; to prove to be
dig sth <-> out ----- [a book, your notes] to find sth that you have not seen for a long time, or that is not easy to find
work out + how much/how many etc. ----- [We need to work out how much we owe them.] ----- [See if you can work this bill out.] to calculate an amount, price, or value
sort sth <-> out ----- [your personal life] to deal with a problem
find sth <-> out (about sb/sth); find out who/what/how etc.; find out that; find out if ----- [To find out more, visit our website.] ----- [Has anyone bothered to find out how much all this is going to cost?] to learn information after trying to discover it or by chance
spy sth <-> out ----- [I’m going to spy out a suitable place to meet.] ----- I'm going out to spy out a beer garden for a possible birthday party venue.] to look around an area in order to find something; to discover sth or find sth out by looking for it intensively
hunt sth <-> out ----- [In the school library he hunted out one of the few existing copies of this book.] to search for and find sth that you need or want, but that is difficult to find ----- MEMORY HOOK: hunt [verb] - to chase wild animals in order to kill them for food [Wolves hunt in packs.]; to look for sth very carefully [She's hunting for a new job.]
make sth out; make out who/what etc. ----- [He could make out a dark shape moving toward him.] ----- [I couldn’t make out what he was saying.] ----- [Can you make out a face here on the photograph?] to see, hear, or understand someone or something with difficulty
