QuestionAnswer
What is dramamine used for? Primarily used to prevent motion sickness. Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and hypotension may occur.
What is Antivert used for? Prevention of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Drowsiness and dry mouth may occur.
What is Pepto-Bismol used for? For diarrhea, gastric distress. OTC liquid and tablet form.
Vistaril For postoperative nausea and vomiting and vertigo (dizziness). Given preoperatively with narcotics to decrease nausea. Give deep IM. Drowsiness and dry mouth usually occur.
Atarax For postoperative nausea and vomiting and vertigo (dizziness). Given preoperatively with narcotics to decrease nausea. Give deep IM. Drowsiness and dry mouth usually occur.
Scopolamine For motion sickness. Anticholinergic side effects (dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation.) Patch is effective for 3 days. Alternate ears if using for longer than 3 days. Wash hands after applying disc/patch. Wear no more than one disc/patch
Compazine Primary use is for severe nausea and vomiting. Secondary use is to reduce anxiety and tension and for psychosis. Drowsiness, dizziness, EPS, and dry mouth may occur.
Phenergan To treat and prevent motion sickness, nausea, and vomiting. S/E drowsiness, confusion, anorexia, dry mouth and eyes, constipation, blurred vision, photosensitivity,HTN, hypotension, urinary retention, transient leukopenia
Inapsine Prevention of n/v and during surgical and diagnostic procedures. May cause hypotension, tachycardia, and EPS.
Ativan To control anxiety and to treat status epilepticus; preoperative sedation. S/E drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, confusion, blurred vision, n/v, anorexia, sleep disturbance, restlessness, hallucinations.
Zofran For nausea and vomiting related to cancer chemotherapy, especially treatment with cisplatin.
Ipecac syrup Induces vomiting after poisoning. Should be given within 60 minutes of poisoning to an alert and conscious individual.
Lomotil To treat diarrhea by slowing intestinal motility. S/E: drowsiness, dizziness,constipation, dry mouth, weakness, flush, rash, blurred vision, mydriasis, urine retention
Paregoric To decrease incidence of diarrhea. Decreases GI peristalsis.
Imodium For diarrhea. Newest OTC drug. does not affect the CNS. Less than 1% reaches systemic circulation.
Kaopectate For diarrhea, gastric distress. OTC liquid and tablet form.
Dulcolax Short-term treatment for constipation; bowel preparation for diagnostic tests. S/E: Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea
Milk of Mag For constipation. take with a glass of water in morning or evening. With frequent use, good renal function is necessary.
Fleet Phospho-Soda For constipation or bowel preparation. Contraindicated with HF.
Senokot For constipation. Available in granules, syrup, and suppository. Prolonged use may cause fluid and electrolyte imbalances. Flatus and abdominal cramps may occur.
FiberCon For prevention of constipation. Also used to treat acute nonspecific diarrhea or diarrhea associated with irritable bowel syndrome. For diarrhea, absorbs water and produces formed stool. For constipation, chew tablet and follow with a full glass of water
Colace For prevention of constipation. Stool softener. Acts on small and large intestines; little absorption. When first used, may take 1 to 5 days for effect. Available with calcium, potassium, or sodium. Because of sodium content, drug. DO not take if HF
GoLYTELY For bowel preparation before GI examination.
