Metaphysical Poetry - term used to group certain 17th century poets together. -Usually in form of a logical argument w/ evidence. - Explores serious issues about human experiences eg. God, Love, Faith etc. - Uses puns, paradoxes,wit, wordplay,jargon, irony, conceits(paradoxical metaphors) + language of argument + logic.
Romanticism - international artistic movement from 1770 - 1870 -Began in a time during immense social upheaval eg. French Rev. -Imagination over logic -Beauty/Power of nature, love & human imagination
Author - Shelley -Major English Romantic poet -Married Mary Shelley who wrote Frankestein -Work reflected radical views of era -Drowned before 30th birthday
Modernism - cultural movement between 1890 - 1950 -Rejected idea that humans are rational & ethical > due to brutality during WW1 & WW2. -Rejected idea of loving God. -Saw human existence as chaotic & brutal. -Experiments w/ traditional literary forms
Author - Sylvia Plath -Wrote confessional poetry (autobiographical type) -Dark poetry due to depression. Often violent & disturbing imagery. -Attempted suicide twice & succeeded on 2nd try.
