BIO 1230 - EXAM 2

Chapter 3

QuestionAnswer
What is a habitat? The environment where an organism lives. (living and nonliving elements)
What is species? A populations or group of populations
What is a population? A group of individuals of a species tthat live in the same area.
What is Evolution? A change over time.
When micro-evolution takes place what evolves? population
What was her dog's name in college? Timber the Wolf
What is Biological diversity (biodiversity)? The variety of life across all levels of biological organization.
How many species have scientists described? 1.8 Million
What is the average length of species? 1-10 million years
How does biodiversity affect people directly? Medicine Food "Food Chain"
What is Extinction? The disappearance of a species from Earth.
What are three natural causes that can cause extinction? severe weather, climate change, changing sea levels.
What is an Endemic? Where a species only exists in a certain, specialized area.
Describe how a species' vulnerability affects it's extinction. If it is a new species, if it is a small population, or if it is a specialized species.
What is Habitat selection? Mobile organisms actively select habitats in which to live among the ranfe of options the encounter.
What are three things that affect Habitat selection? Availability and quality and human development.
What is a niche? functional role in a community. ( a summary of everything an organism does)
How does smaller animal affect a habitat? Because if the animal is smaller than it will use less space.
What is a specialists? species with narrow breadth, and very specific requirements
What are some characteristics of a specialists? They are good at what they do, but they are vulnerable if conditions change.
What are some characteristics of a generalists? able to live in many different places and weather variable conditions, but they may not thrive in any one situation.
What is a generalist? species with broad niche, which uses a wide array of habitats
What is population size? number of individuals
what is population density? number of individuals per unit area
Larger areas usually have ____ density lower
What is sex ratio? portion of males to females
What is age distribution? relative numbers of organisms of each age in population
What are the four factors of population change? Natality (Births), Mortality (Deaths), Immigration (Arrival), Emigration (Departure). [No Monkeys In Europe]
What is an Exponential population growth? Where a population increases by a fixed percent (J-shaped curve)
When does exponential population growth occur in nature (four things)? Small population, low competition, ideal conditions, manipulations of the environment (humans)
What are limiting factors? Physical. chemical, and biological attributes of the environment THAT RESTRAIN POPULATION GROWTH.
What does limiting factors determine? carrying capacity
What are some factors that contribute to environmental resistance? Space, Food, Water, Mates, Shelter, Suitable breeding sites, Temperature, Disease, Predators
What are some factors that contribute to environmental resistance (aquatic systems)? Salinity, Sunlight, Temperature
What is Environmental resistance? it stabilizes the population size at it's carrying capacity.
What is a Logistic growth curve? (S-Shaped Curve) Rises sharply at first but then begins to level off as the effects of limiting factors become stronger.
