POPULATION ETHNICITY a way of DESCRIBING the cultural or racial origins of a country's people
QUOTA the number of immigrants ALLOWED to enter the country each year
REFUGEE a person who HAS TO LEAVE their homeland because they fear for their lives
CULTURE SHOCK the DIFFICULTIES faced when moving to a new place which has a very different culture
BABY BOOM a period of HIGHER than usual birth rates
CENSUS the OFFICIAL COUNT of a population by government (every 5 years in NZ)
NET MIGRATION the difference between the numbers of IMMIGRANTS and the number of EMIGRANTS
PUSH FACTORS NEGATIVE things about a place that make people want to LEAVE
PULL FACTORS POSITIVE things about a place that make people want to GO there
INTERVENING OBSTACLES things which may make it DIFFICULT for a person to migrate
MIGRATE to MOVE from one place to another to live
EMIGRANT a person who LEAVES a country to live somewhere else
MIGRATION the PROCESS of people moving from one place to another to live
