Chapter 18 Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
These waves are created by vibrating electric charges and magnetic charges that can travel through space or through matter. electromagnetic waves
A narrow beam of light traveling in a straight line. light ray
A material through which a wave travels. medium
A line drawn perpendicular to a surface or line. normal
This states that when a wave is reflected, the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection. law of reflection
A point on the optical axis of a mirror or lens where rays traveling parallel to the optical axis pass through. focal point
The distance along the optical axis from the center of a mirror or lens to the focal point. focal length
The bending of a wave as it changes speed, moving from one medium to another. refraction
A transparent object that has at least one curved surface that causes light to bend. lens
A lens that is thicker in the middle than at its edges, causing light rays to converge at a focal point. convex lens
A lens that is thicker at its edges than in the middle, causing light rays to diverge. concave lens
A region on the inner surface of the back of the eye that contains light-sensitive cells. retina
An optical telescope that uses a concave mirror to focus light and form an image at the focal point. reflecting telescope
An optical telescope that uses a double convex lens to bend light and form an image at the focal point. refracting telescope
If an object looks blue, what color waves is it reflecting? blue
If white light were shone through a green filter, what color light would pass through the filter? green
What are the primary colors of light? red, green, blue
What are the secondary colors of light? yellow, magenta, cyan
What material allows no light to pass through it? opaque
What material allows some light to pass throught it? translucent
What material allows almost all light to pass through it? transparent
What are the behaviors of waves that allow us to see color? reflection and absorption

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
