Describe Ecuador. 70% of population is below the poverty line and there are extreme racial/ethnic disparities.
Why was the 1990’s considered the “Indigenous Decade”? Because throughout the decade, things such as land rights, bilingual education, indigenous political party and constitutional rights were enforced.
Explain the “one drop” theory. If you have one drop of x blood, then you are x.
People used to believe that what race would eventually “die out”? African Americans.
How did Native Americans use lineage to ancestors to determine who could access their territory? In order to classify you had to be ¼ or ½ native. In other words, your grandparents or parent had to be full blooded.

What does Degollador mean and what does it relate to? It describes killing by decapitating or the cutting of the jugular vein; relates the the nakaq & the butchering of Indians.
What was pishtaco “equipped” with? A title of importance, such as a priest, monk, engineer or military officer.
In Weismantel’s article, what is the importance of fat? The citizens believed that fat did absolutely everything and was used for absolutely everything.

What is a nakaq and what does one look like? A white foreigner, really tall with a big body.
Describe race in Brazil. Racial definitions are more fluid; most of the population identifies as parado (mixed)
Describe Kottak’s “race” study. Done in Brazil; 100 people were shown 3 different photos which consisted of 3 sisters and were asked to identify their race. Only 6 people identified them as the same race.
How does race function in Brazil? Based on a broad continuum; you base others on the continuum and then identify yourself on the continuum.
What country has one of the largest histories of white populations controlling power? Brazil.
What is mixing and clashing? Tension because one’s race is being planted into another race.
How does racial segregation at colleges work in Brazil? The government has a board which decides (based on a photo id) which students are dark enough to qualify for the 20% of dark students allowed in.
What is the Bell Curve of 1994’s central argument? Intelligence is substantially influenced by both inherited and the environmental factors and is a better predictor of many personal dynamics rather than an individual’s parental socioeconomic status or education level.
