1. Christians In the Acts of the Apostles we learn that it was at Antioch that Jesus’ followers were called what for the first time?
2. Centurion A Military leader and commander of a hundred soldiers in the Roman army.
3. Decapolis This area was large and included 10 large cities collectively called by what name.
4. Disciples These can refer to those who believed & followed the teachings of Jesus. Their name suggests that they were 'disciplined' in His doctrine.
5. Essenes A SECT OF MYSTICAL JEWS. They are most notably associated with the Qumran communities that wrote the famous Dead Sea Scrolls.
6. Evangelists Title given to the four gospels writers.
7. Galileans These were citizens who were viewed by Judeans as inferior. Their province was large & included 10 large cities collectively called Decapolis.
8. Gentiles These were non-Jews. This term usually referred to Greeks & Romans but applied to all "non - Jews" or persons who were not descendants of Abraham.
9. Greeks Everyone in the Roman Empire spoke this language & after Christ’s death the gospel was spread throughout the world in the this language.
10. Herodians These are members of the POLITICAL PARTY OF King Herod Antipas who was ruler over Galilee and Perea during the lifetime of Jesus.
11. Jews These were DESCENDENTS OF JUDAH. In its narrowest definition they were descendants of Abraham through Judah.
12. Levites These were ASSISTANTS TO THE PRIESTS in the Temple and descendants of the tribe of Levi.
13. Paul This person is referred to as the “Apostle to the Gentiles.”
14. Pharisees A SECT OF JEWS that emphasized strict interpretation and observance of the Mosaic Law in both its oral & written form. They advocated & adhered to the strict observance of the Sabbath rest, purity rituals & food restrictions
15. Priests These were both RULERS AND TEMPLE OFFICIALS and were descendants of Aaron, the brother of Moses.
16. Publicans These were Jews who were Roman Citizens & tax collectors. They often collected more money than necessary & kept the extra for themselves.
17. Rabbi A Teacher of Jewish Law. Also, this was also a title given to Jesus.
18. Romans These were CITIZENS OF ROMAN EMPIRE which was the seat of world power at the time of Jesus.
19. Sadducees A SECT OF ARISTOCRATIC JEWS who accepted only the written Mosaic Law; also they did not believe in the resurrection from the dead.
20. Samaritans These were descendants of the old northern tribes of the kingdom of Israel. Great hatred existed between these people and the Jews at the time of Jesus.=
21. Great Sanhedrin This was the highest, Jewish tribunal during Greek & Roman times; it was somewhat like a senate and was composed of 70 religious elders plus the Jewish High Priest. They had jurisdiction over religious matters.
22. Scribes These were JEWISH LAWYERS. They were a specific kind of Pharisee who studied the Law of Moses in detail. They were men specially trained in writing and thus influential as interpreters and teachers of the Law.
23. Sect A religious group or party that has distinctive teachings & doctrines; they were smaller a group or part of a larger group.
24. Zealots A member of a Jewish patriotic party that was started to resist Roman power and aggression. Simon the Apostle was in this group
