Chapter 16 Flashcards
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is radioactivity? | the process in which some nuclei give off nuclear radiation |
What is mass number? | the sum of the numbers of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom |
What are the 3 types of radioactive decays? | alpha decay, beta decay, and gamma decay |
What is an isotope? | an atom that has the same number of protons as other atoms of the same element do but has a different number of neutrons |
What is one example of damage to living matter because of radiation? | radiation sickness, increasing risk of cancer |
What is one example of damage to nonliving matter from radiation? | makes metals lose electrons, therefore metal is weaker |
What is half-life? | the time needed for half of a sample of a radioactive substance to undergo radioactive decay |
What is one example of radioactivity being useful? | use tracers to help diagnose medical problems, radioactive isotopes to help detect defects in structures |
What is nuclear fission? | the process by which a large nucleus splits into 2 small nuclei and releases energy |
What is a nuclear chain reaction? | a continuous series of nuclear fission reactions |
