What is radioactivity? the process in which some nuclei give off nuclear radiation
What is mass number? the sum of the numbers of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
What are the 3 types of radioactive decays? alpha decay, beta decay, and gamma decay
What is an isotope? an atom that has the same number of protons as other atoms of the same element do but has a different number of neutrons
What is one example of damage to living matter because of radiation? radiation sickness, increasing risk of cancer
What is one example of damage to nonliving matter from radiation? makes metals lose electrons, therefore metal is weaker
What is half-life? the time needed for half of a sample of a radioactive substance to undergo radioactive decay
What is one example of radioactivity being useful? use tracers to help diagnose medical problems, radioactive isotopes to help detect defects in structures
What is nuclear fission? the process by which a large nucleus splits into 2 small nuclei and releases energy
What is a nuclear chain reaction? a continuous series of nuclear fission reactions
