| anatomical position | standard position for the purpose of study, body is erect, hands by side with palms forward, legs and toes pointing forward |
| anatomy | the study of the structure of the human body and its parts |
| anterior | front of the body, an organ or a structure |
| anteroposterior | anterior section and the posterior section of the body |
| blood | includes blood cells and plasma. transports oxygen and nutrients to the cells, carbon dioxide to the lungs and wastes to the kidneys |
| body system | a way to study the body according to its structures and how they function |
| cardiology | medical specialty that deals with the cardiovascular system |
| cardiovascular system | body systems that includes the heart, arteries, veins and capillaries. it circulates the blood throughout the body |
| caudad | toward the tail bone |
| cavity | hollow space surrounded by bones or muscles and containing organs and other structures |
| cell | smallest independently functioning structure in the body that can reproduce itself by division |
| cephalad | toward the head |
| coronal plane | plane that divides the body into the front and back sections, anterior and posterior, it is also known as the FRONTAL PLANE |
| cranial cavity | cavity in the head that is surrounded by the bony cranium and contains the brain, cranial nerves, and other structures |
| dentistry | medical specialty that deals with the teeth and gums |
| dermatology | medical specialty that deals with the integumentary system |
| dietetics | medical specialty that deals with nutrition, nutrients, foods, and diet |
| distal | pertaining to away from the point of origin of an arm or leg (going the distance) |
| dorsal | pertaining to the posterior of the body, particularly the back, lying on the back is being in the dorsal or DORSAL SUPINE position (dorsal fin on the back of a shark) |
| endocrine system | body system that includes the pituitary gland, pineal gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, thymus, pancreas, adrenal glands, ovaries, and testes. it produces and secretes hormones into the blood that direct the activities of the body |
| endocrinology | medical specialty that deals with the endocrine system |
| epigastric region | region on the surface of the abdominopelvic area, it is superior to the umbilical region and between the right and left hypochondriac regions |
| external | pertaining to the outer, superficial surface of the body, and organ or other structure |
| gastroenterology | medical specialty that deals with the gastrointestinal system |
| gastrointestinal system | body system that includes the mouth, teeth, tongue, salivary glands, pharynx(throat), esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. It digests food, absorbs nutrients into the blood, and excretes undigested wastes |
| genital | pertaining to the male or female genitalia |
| geriatrics | medical specialty that deals with older adults |
| gynecology | medical specialty that deals with the female genital system |
| health | state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being |
| hematology | medical specialty that deals with the blood |
| hypochondriac regions | left and right regions on the surface of the abdominopelvic area, they are inferior to the ribs |
| hypogastric region | region on the surface of the abdominopelvic area, it is inferior to the umbilical region and between the right and left inguinal regions |
| immunology | medical specialty that deals with the lymphatic system and the immune response |
| inferior | pertaining to the lower part of the body, and organ or a structure |
| inguinal regions | left and right regions on the surface of the abdominopelvic area, they are inferior to the lumbar regions. They are also known as the ILIAC REGIONS |
| integumentary system | body system that includes the skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, and oil glands. It receives sensory information for the sensations of pain, touch, and temperature. It protects the internal organs from infection and trauma |
| internal | pertaining to the inside of the body, an organ or structure |
| lateral | pertaining to the side of the body, and organ or a structure |
| lumbar regions | left and right regions on the surface of the abdominopelvic area, they are on either side of the umbilical region |
| lymphatic system | body system that includes the lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, lymph fluid, spleen, thymus, and white blood cells. It recognizes and destroys disease-causing organisms and abnormal cells |
