Bilirubin | orange-colored bile pigment produced by the breakdown of heme from the hemoglobin molecule. |
Diapedesis | ameboid movement of blood cells(especially leukocyes) through the wall of a capillary and out into the tissues. |
Hematology | study of blood and blood-forming tissues. |
Hemoglobin | iron-containing pigment of erythrocytes that transports oxygen in the body. |
Hemolysis | breakdown of erythrocytes with the release of hemoglobin into plasma. |
Leukocytosis | abnormal increase in the number of WBC(greater than 11,000 per cubic mm of blood). |
Leukopenia | abnormal decrease in the number of WBC (less than 4500 per cubic mm of blood). |
Oxyhemoglobin | Hemoglobin that has combined with oxygen. |
Phagocytosis | engulfing and destruction of foreign particles, such as bacteria, by special cells called phagocytes. |
Polycythemia | disorder in which there is an increase in the RBC mass. |
