Question | Answer |
---|---|
What processes are involved in the water cycle? | evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and the return of flowing water to the ocean |
Groundwater | Water found underground within cracks and between particles of rock and soil. |
How much of Earth's water is fresh water? | 2.8 % |
Water cycle | The continuous movement of water. |
What powers the water cycle? | sunlight and gravity |
Transpiration | water vapor released into atmosphere from leaves of trees and plants. |
What is condensation? | when air becomes cool , water vapor condenses and gets closer together, forming water droplets or ice crystals. |
Why does precipitation happen? | Water droplets or ice crystals in clouds get too heavy, gravity causes them to fall to ground. Temperature decides what kiind of precipitation |
Glacier | A large mass of moving ice and snow on land |
Where is Earth's fresh water found? | A small portion is found in atmosphere, streams and lakes. MOST is located in groundwater and glaciers |
Runoff | Water that flows over Earth's surface |
Tributaries | smaller streams that run into major rivers |
Watershed | An area of land that contributes water to a river system also can be called a drainage basin |
What are ponds and lakes? | depressions in the land where water gathers |
Saturated zone | region deep below the surface where pore spaces are entirely filled with groundwater |
Water table | The top of the saturated zone |
Permeable rock | A rock that water can easily pass through |
Impermeable rock | A rock that water cannot easily pass through |
How long does water vapor stay in the atmosphere? | A few hours or up to a few days |
Where does most of the Earth's evaporation occur? | Over the oceans |
Aquifer | A permeable rock layer that is saturated with water |
People rely on aquifers for what? | Drinking water and agriculture |
What are the five fresh water locations? | atmosphere, streams, lakes, ground water, and glaciers |
What process forms clouds? | Condensation |
What percentage of fresh water is ground water? | .7% |
Making fresh water from ocean salt water is called what? | Desalination |
What are some examples of permeable rock? | Sandstone and limestone rock |
what are some examples of impermeable rock? | Shale and unbroken granite |
