Forces Vocab Bri P.

Brianna Piersimoni's Forces Vocab

WordDefinition
Force a push or pull.
Net force The combination of all forces acting on an object.
Momentum a characteristic of a moving object that is related to the mass and the velocity of the object.
Formula for Momentum p=m*v
Law of Conversation in the absence of outside forces the total momentum of objects that interact does not change.
Units of Force Newton
Inertia The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion
Balanced Forces Equal forces acting on one object in oppisite directions
Unbalanced Forces Whenever there is a net force acting on an object the forces are unbalnced. Motion occurs.
Magnitude The great size or extent of something
Friction The force that two surfaces exert on each other when they rub against each other
Static Friction The friction that acts on objects that are not moving
Kinetic Friction Kinetic friction is a product of the coefficient of kinetic friction and the normal reaction force
Sliding Friction occurs when two solid surfaces slide over each other
Rolling Friction When an object rolls across a surface
Fluid Friction When a solid object moves through a fluid
Newton's First Law of Motion An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion.
Newton's Second Law of Motion The bigger the mass the bigger the force needed
Newton's Third Law of Motion For every action there is an equal and opposite re-action.
Law of Universal Gravitation mass attracts other proportional mass
Freefall When the force on an object is gravity
Terminal Velocity The greatest velocity a falling object reaches
Weight Force of gravity on a person or object at the surface of a planet
Mass body of matter with no definite shape
Centripetal Force Any force that causes on object to move in a circular path
Geosynchronous Orbit is an orbit around the Earth

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
