Chapter 3:Linear
Linear Functions
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Constant-Increase Situ ations | In many situations there is an initial condition and a constant change applied to that condition. This kind of situation can always be modeled by a linear equation. |
What is the initial condition? | The y-intercept is the initial condition or the starting point in the situation. |
What is the slope-intercept formula? | y=mx+b or f(x)= mx+b |
What is a linear function? | Is a function with an equation of the form y=mx+b |
Thereom | If two lines have the same slope, then they are parallel. |
Thereom | If two non-vertical lines are parallel, then they have the same slope. |
What is an example of an Linear Combination? | 20P+32L |
What is a linear combination? | This expression is called a linear combination of P and L. In a linear combination, all variables are to the first power and are not multiplied or divided by each other. |
Thereom | The graph of Ax+By=C, where A and B are not both 0, is a line. |
What is the point-slop thereom? | If a line contains(x1,y1) and has slope m, then it has equation y-y1=m(x-x1) |
Ex: In 1990, there were approximentely 143.5 million cars in the United sates. Predict the number of traffic deaths. | Solution: A. Subsitute 143.5 for x in the equation y= 323.5x+706 y= 323.5 X 143.5+706 y= 47,128.25 |
What is an arithmetic sequence? | A sequence with a constant difference between succesive terms is called an arithmetic sequence. |
