charter the right to orgnaize settlements in an area
joint-stock company a company where investors bought stock, or part ownership, in the company in return for a share of its future profits
burgesses the elected representatives of a colony to an assembly who had the right to make local laws for the colony
dissented disagreed with the beliefs or practices fo the Protestant Anglican Church (Anglicans)
persecuted to treat harshly for a reason
Puritans The Protestants who wanted to reform the Anglican Church
Separatists Those who wanted to leave and found their own churches
Pilgrims What the Separatists considered themselves to be because their journey had a religious purpose
Mayflower Compact The formal document that the Pilgrims drew up in order to provide order in their new colony. This compact pledged their loyalty to Englandand declared their intention of forming "a civil body politic, for our better ordering and preservation."
toleration Official recognition of the rights of individuals and groups to hold dissenting opinions, especially on religion.
patroons The wealthy landowners who acquired the riverfront estates that were given to anyone who brought at least 50 settlers to work the land.
proprietary colony A colony in which teh owner, or proprietor, woned all the land and controlled the government.
pacifists people who refuse to use force or to fight in wars. (Quakers)
indentured servants People who in return for the payment of their passage to America agreed to work without pay for a certain period of time.
constitution A plan of government that covered subjects such as land distribution and social ranking.
debtor Those unable to repay their debts and were generally thrown in prison.
tenant farmer The settlers that paid their lord an annual rent and worked for him for a fixed number of days each year.
mission religious settlements established to convert people to a particular faith.
