QuestionAnswer
Motion when an object changes position over time when compared to a reference point
Speed the rate an object moves
Average Speed Formula total distance over total speed
Velocity the speed an object is in an particular direction
What can cause velocity to change ? (2 things) sped and direction
Acceleration the rate in which velocity changes
Acceleration is how fast what changes ? velocity
Acceleration Formula final velocity – starting velocity over time it takes to change velocity
Positive Acceleration & Examples acceleration in which velocity increased and ex is 1 m/s to 5 m/s and plane taking off
Negative Acceleration & Examples acceleration in which velocity decreased and ex is a car stopping at a stop sign
Centripetal Acceleration & Example acceleration that occurs in a circular motion and ex is a windmill
Force push or pull
Newton (N) the force unit in science
Net Force the force that results from combining all forces exerted on an object
Why are unbalanced forces necessary to cause movement ? when the net force on an object is not zero they are unbalanced and unbalanced forces produce a change in movement
Balanced Forces when the forces applied to an object produce a net force of zero
Friction the force that opposes motion between to surfaces that are touching
Sources of Friction friction occurs because the surface of an object is rough
Relationship between greater force & friction greater force creates more friction
Sliding Friction very effective at opposing the movement of objects which means a lot of force to move
Rolling Friction less force than sliding friction easy to move
Fluid Friction less force than sliding friction so it opposes the motion of objects through a fluid
Ways to reduce friction – lubricants substances that are applied to surfaces to reduce the friction between them
Ways to reduce friction – sandpaper use sandpaper on wood to smooth out the rubbing up against it
Ways to increase friction make surfaces rougher sand on an icy road to keep cars from skidding
Section 4
Gravity the force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses
Why must force be used to lift objects? you must apply forces to overcome earth’s gravitational force
What does the Law of Universal Gravitation state? (3 parts) gravitational force is small between objects with small masses, gravitational force is larger between objects with large masses, if the distance between to objects is increased the gravitational force pulling them together is reduced

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
