Climate Chapter 10

QuestionAnswer
How is climate different from weather? Weather is a DAILY description of the temperature, pressure and precipitation conditions. Climate is a LONG TERM view of temperature, pressure, and precipitation in the atmosphere.
What 3 factors determine the temperature of the Earth? 1) Amount of sunlight the Earth recieves 2) Amount of sunlight the Earth reflects (doesn't absorb) 3) Atmospheric retention of reradiated heat
What are the main ingredients of the air I breathe? Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon, Carbon Dioxide, other elements AND compounds and water vapor
What are at least 4 greenhouse gases that are increasing in concentration in the atmosphere? Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitros Oxide, Chlorofluorocarbons.
How much CO2 has been increasing since 1958? What is the biggest contributer to this increase? -18% -Fossil Fuels
What is the atmospheric greenhouse effect? warming of the atmosphere due to trapping of infrared rays by atmospheric gases, especially as due to the large amount of CO2 from fossil fuels
Where do scientists get the evidence to support that the greenhouse effect has been going on for a while? CO2 levels from air bubbles in the Antarctic ice sheet AND CO2 in atmosphere
What is thermohaline conveyor? What does it deliver around the globe? deep water current driven by variations in density caused by differences in temperature and salinity. It delivers moist air around the globe which helps rainfall.
What happens in an El Nino year? An El Nina year? El Nino - South and Central America gets more rainfall and the US is warmer than normal in winters. El Nina - US is relatively drier and there are warmer winters in the South and Southwest.
What are the two approaches to evaluating the cause of climate change? 1) Accurate measurements of the direct impact of greenhouse gases and other human influences. 2) Accurate reconstructions of the natural component of climate chamge that allow us to subtract it from observed warming. **requires long time record**
What effects of limate change might we see in the future? Human Health Concerns, Weather Pattern Change, Wildlife Concerns, Melting Glaciers and rising sea level, Ocean Ecosystem would change too
