Foley Weather

5/6th

QuestionAnswer
atmosphere envelope of gases that surround the earth
weather the condition of the earth's atmosphere at a specific time and place
water vapor water in a gas form
air pressure the weight of the column of air pushing down on an area
barometer instrument used to measure air pressure
inches the units that a mercury barometer measures air pressure in.
altitude distance above sea level
troposphere layer of the atmosphere closes to earth
electromagnetic waves energy from the sun that can move through the vacuum of space
infrared radiation long wavelengths of energy
ultraviolet radiation short wavelengths of energy
visible light the wavelengths of energy that we can see
greenhouse effect heating up of the earth's atmosphere due to an envelope of carbon dioxide gas that traps the sun's energy
thermometer instrument used to measure temperature
wind horizontal movement of air from area of high pressure to an area of low pressure
anemometer instrument used to measure wind speed
local winds winds that blow over short distances
global winds winds that blow over long distances
doldrums calm areas where warm air rises
prevailing westerlies global winds that blow from west to east across North America
Jet stream bands of high-speed winds high above the earth
relative humidity the percentage of water vapor in the air as compared to how much the air can hold at that temperature
psychrometer instrument used to measure relative humidity
clouds formed when water vapor condenses to form liquids. Needs cooling and particles.
cirrus clouds wispy, feathery clouds (curl of hair)
cumulus clouds "heaps" of cloud - fluffy, rounded masses.
stratus clouds spread out - flat layers of clouds. Create an overcast day.
precipitation any type of water falling from the sky
air mass huge body of air that has similar temperature, humidity and air pressure
tropical air mass originates near the tropics - has warm air
polar air mass originates near the poles - has cold air
maritime air mass originates over oceans -has high humidity
continental air mass originates over land - dry air
fronts the boundary where air masses meet
warm front formed when a warm air mass moves into a cold air mass
cold front forms when a cold air mass moves into a warm air mass
occluded front forms when a warm air mass is trapped between two cold air masses and gets pushed up
stationary front occurs when a cold and warm air mass are stalled and do not move.
cumulonimbus clouds type of clouds where thunderstorms form
tornado rapidly whirling, funnel shaped cloud that touches earth's surface
hurricane storm that originates over a warm, open ocean
meteorologist scientist who study and predict weather
isobar lines that connect areas of equal pressure
Griggs Putnam index of deformity a measure of wind speeds
Fujita scale scale used to measure tornado speeds and damage
