QuestionAnswer
LIGHT UNIT TERMS
1. Radiation Emission of energy in the form of EM waves
2. Particle – wave theory of light
3. Electromagnetic Spectrum The entire ranges of EM waves
4. Radio Waves Cover wide ranges of EM spectrum. Low Frequency; Long Wavelength
5. AM Radio Amplitude Modulation
6. FM Radio Frequency Modulation
7. Ionosphere
8. Microwaves Shorter Wavelengths than radio waves; Higher Frequency
9. Radar Radio Detection and ranging
10. Infrared Waves Shorter Wavelengths than microwaves; Higher Frequency
11. Visible Light Narrow ranges of wavelengths that humans can see
12. Ultraviolet Light Shorter Wavelengths than Visible light; Higher Frequency; Produced by Sun
13. X-Rays Carry much energy and can penetrate a variety of materials
14. Gamma Rays Carry large amounts of energy and can penetrate materials very easily
15. Law of Reflection states that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection
16. Regular Reflection When light beams are reflected at the same angle
17. Diffuse reflection When light beams reflect at many different angles
18. Absorption The transfer of energy carried by light waves to particles of matter
19. Scattering The release of light energy by particles of matter that have absorbed energy
20. Transmission the passing of light through matter
21. Transparent matter through which visible light is easily transmitted
22. Opaque Matter that does no transmit any light
23. Translucent matter transmits light but also scatters the light as it passes through
24. Primary Colors of Light Red, Blue, Green
25. Pigment a material that gives a substance its color by absorbing some colors of light and reflection others
26. Primary Pigments Yellow, Cyan, Magenta
27. Prism A glass piece often made of glass used to disperse light and break it up into a spectrum
28. Plane Mirror a mirror with a flat surface
29. Concave Mirror Mirrors that curve inward
30. Convex Mirror A mirror that curves outward
31. Virtual Image an image through which light does not actually travel
32. Real Image an image through which light passes
33. Concave Lens A lens that is thinner in the middle than the edges
34. Convex Lens A lens that is thicker in the middle than the edges
35. Retina The back surface of the eye
36. Nearsightedness occurs when the eye is too long and the lens focuses light in front of the retina
37. Farsightedness occurs when the eye is too short and the lens focuses behind the retina
38. Colorblindness occurs when the cones in the retina do not receive the right instructions
39. Rods
40. Cones
41. Laser a device that produces intense light of only one color or wavelength
42. Hologram a piece of film on which an interference pattern produces three-dimensional image of an object
43. Maiman – created the first laser
44. Dennis Gaber – invented hologram
45. Luminous – Objects that produce visible light
46. Illuminated – a visible object that is not a light source

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
