Igneous rock with fine to medium crystals and has no layers. Colors can vary with (white, gray, pink and yellow) granite
Metamorphic rock with medium to large crystals and bands that are white and dark. gneiss
Metamorphic rock with fine crystals and luster. This rock breaks into sheets and can be bluish gray, green, or brown. slate
Sedimentary rock with fine grains that are not visible. It is a soft fossil. This rock can be white, gray, or black . limestone
Sedimentary rock that breaks into layers. It is a fossil. shale
Sedimentary rock that feels like sandpaper and is a fossil. This rock can be white, tan, red, or brown. sandstone
Sedimentary rock that is brittle and easily broken. It is black to shiny black and is light for its size. This rock is mostly carbon plant materials. coal
The layer that we live on that is easily accessible. crust
The portion of the earth between the crust and the core. It is composed of very hot dense rock and 1800 miles thick. mantle
The inner most part of the earth's core. The temperature may reach 8,000 degrees F. It is about 800 miles thick. inner core
The outer most part of the earth's core. Composed of melted metals, nickel and iron. It is about 1400 miles thick. outer core

An opening in the earth's crust from which molten lava, rocks, ashes, dust, and gases are ejected from the earth's surface. volcano
