Glossary TermDefinition
Gandhi Was a major political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian independence movement. In India, he is recognized as the Father of the Nation.
Nehru Was a political leader of the Indian National Congress, was a pivotal figure during the Indian independence movement and served as the first Prime Minister of the Republic of India.
Indian Congress Party A major political party in India. Its leaders included Gandhi and Nehru.
Jinnah Was an Indian Muslim politician and leader of the Muslim League who founded Pakistan and served as its first Governor-General.
Muslim League A political party in British India that developped into the driving force behind the creation of Pakistan as a Muslim state from British India on the Indian subcontinent.
Kashmir The northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. Historically a source of friction between India and Pakistan which continues until the present time.
Hindu The largest relgion in the Indian subcontinent. It was the religion of Gandhi and Nehru.
Muslim The second largest religion in the Indian Sub-Continent. It became the main religon of Pakistan.
Amritsar Massacare, 1919 British troops opened fire on peace Indian protestors after the First World War. As a result Gandhi realized that he would not be able to negotiate with the British and began his campaign of passive resistance.
Passive Resistance The practice of applying power to achieve socio-political goals through symbolic protests, economic or political noncooperation, civil disobedience and other methods, without using violence. Passive resis
Non-Violence Throughout his life, Gandhi remained committed to this approach to change even in the most extreme situations.
Civil Disobedance Encompasses the active refusal to obey certain laws, demands and commands of a government or of an occupying power without resorting to physical violence.
Salt March,1930 An act of protest against a British tax in Colonial India. Mahatma Gandhi along with his followers, walked across Indian to the ocean.
Partition of India, 1947 The creation of India and Pakistan after British withdrawl.
