How and when was Hawaii annexed? President Mckinley favored annexation and after the spanish american war congress proclaimed hawaii an offical u.s territory.
What was the U.S role in the world at the turn of the 20th century? Our millitary was overseas fighting.
What is an extractive economy? An economy in a colony where the colonizing country removes raw materials and ships them back home to benefit its economy.
What did congress do to Hawaii in 1898? Congress approved annexation of Hawaii
What is imperialism? Political,Millitary, and economic domination of strong nations over weaker territories.
What is Social Darwinism and why is it important? A belief held that a certain nation sand races were surperior to others and therefor destined to rule over them.
Why did the U.S want overseas territory? So the U.S had easier access to setting up millitary bases
Who is Jose Marti and why is he important? Rival newspaper publisher. His stories exaggerated Spanish atrocities and compared cuban rebels to the patriots of american revolution.
What does jingoism mean? aggresive patriosm.
Who are the Rough Riders? Group of men consisting of rugged westerners and upper class easterners who fought during the spanish american war and are often remembered for the charge up San Juan Hill.
Who is Emilio Aquinaldo and why is he important? He led the filipino nationalists.
Explain what happened with the Treaty of Paris and what countries it affeected? The treaty of paris ended the Spanish-American war. Spain gave up control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the pacific island of gwam.
Who ran for pres on an anti imperialist platform? William Howard Taft
What did the teller amendment do? The amendment stated that the United States would not annex Cuba after the war.
what is an insurrection? The act or an instance of open revolt against civil authority or a constituted government.
What is a guerilla warfare? Guerrilla warfare was a hit-and-run technique used in fighting a war.
What was sphere of influence? a region dominated and controlled by an outside power.
How did the U.S demonstrate it's domincance over the philippines? through military action, with economics pressure,through diplomatic relations
What was the Jones act and what did it do? Granted Filipinos the Right to elect both houses of their legislature.
What did the Open Door policy state? stated that all countries should have equal access to any Chinese port open to trade.
When did the Philippines finally gain independance? July 4th 1946
How did pres Roosevelt win the NPP? He won it for mediating the Russo-Japanese war.
