Therapeutic Drug Classifications

angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor suppresses the conversion of angiotensin in the blood by the angiotensin converting enzyme; treats hypertension
antianginal drug that dilates coronary arteries, restoring oxygen to the tissues to relieve the pain of angina pectoris
antiarrhythmic counteracts cardiac arrhythmia
anticoagulant prevents clotting of the blood - used in treating thrombophlebitis and myocardial infarction
antihypertensive drug that lowers blood pressure
beta-adrenergic blocking agents (beta blockers) inhibit responses to sympathetic adrenergic nerve activity causing a slowing of electrical conduction and heart rate and lowering blood pressure. treat angina pectoris and hypertension
calcium channel blockers inhibit calcium entry in heart muscle cells, slowing the heart rate, lessening oxygen demand, relaxing smooth muscle cells. prevent/treat angina pectoris, arrhythmias, and hypertension
cardiotonic increases the force of myocardial contractions in the heart. treats congestive heart failure
diuretic increases the secrection of urine. treats hypertension
hypolipidemic reduces the serum fat and cholesterol
statins lower cholesterol in the blood by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase (liver enzyme that makes cholesterol)
thrombolytic agents drugs to dissolve thrombi (blood clots) ex streptokinase, tissure plaminogen activator
vasoconstrictor drug that causes narrowing of the blood vessels decreasing blood flow
vasodilator causes dilation of the blood vessels, increasing blood flow
