Question | Answer |
---|---|
Energy | ability to do work |
Potential Energy | energy an object has because of its position or shape |
Kinetic Energy | energy of motion |
Relationship between kinetic and potential energy | when you add them together you get Mechanical energy |
Kinetic energy formula | mv2/2 |
Potential energy formula | weight x height |
Mechanical energy | total energy of motion and position of an object |
Mechanical energy formula | potential energy + kinetic energy |
Law of conservation of energy | energy can’t be created or destroyed |
Thermal energy | kinetic energy, particles are always in motion, energy because the way the particles are arranged, the higher the temperature the faster the particles |
Chemical energy | form of potential energy, some molecules that have many atoms bonded together have a lot of chemical energy |
Electrical energy | the energy of moving electrons, can be considered as potential energy or kinetic energy |
Sound energy | caused by objects vibrations, form of potential and kinetic energy, you must move the position of something to get this energy |
Light energy | produced by vibrations of electrically charged particles, light vibrations cause energy to be transmitted |
Nuclear energy | this energy is associated with changes in the nucleus of an atom, energy is produced in 2 ways, when two or more nuclei join together or when the nucleus of the atom splits apart |
Types of energy resources | they can’t be replaced only after millions of years |
Coal | used for electric power, heating, making steel, industrial uses, and coal exports |
Petroleum | supplies us with gasoline, kerosene, and wax and also petrochemicals, used to make synthetic fibers |
Natural gas | it’s used in heating systems, cleanest burning fossil fuel |
Renewable energy | can be used and replaced in nature over a relatively short time |
Solar energy | sunlight can be converted into electrical energy through solar cells |
Hydroelectric energy | potential energy of water is converted into kinetic energy as the water flows downhill through a dam |
Wind energy | kinetic energy from the wind can be converted to electrical energy |
Geothermal energy | energy resulting from the heating of earth’s crust |
Biomass | organic matter such as plants can be burned to release energy |
