QuestionAnswer
an atom's central region, which is made up of protons and neutrons. nucleus
a subatomic particle that has no charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom. proton
a subatomic particle that has no charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom. neutron
a subatomic particle that has a negative elecrtic charge. electron
a regional in an atom where there is a high probability of finding electrons. orbital
an electron that is found in the outermost shell of an atom and that determines the atom's chemical properties. valence electron
the law that states that the repeating chemical and physical properties of elements change periodically with the atomic number of elements. periodic law
the time that it takes a complete cycle or wave oscillation to occur. period
a vertical column of elements in the periodic table. group
an atom, or molecule that has gained or lost one or more electrons and has a negative or positive charge. ion
the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom; the atomic number is the same for all atoms of an element. atomic number
the sum of the numbers of protons as other atoms of the same number of protons as other atoms of the same element do but that has a diferent numbe rof neutrons. isotope
a unit of mass that describes the mass of an atom or molecule; it is exactly one-twelfth of the mass of a carbon atom. atomic mass unit
the weighted average of the masses of all naturally occuring isotopes of an element. average atomic mass
an element that is shiny and that conducts heat and electricity well. metal
an element that conducts heat and electricity poorly and that does not form positive ions in an electrolytic solution. non metal
an element or compound that conducts electric current better than an insulator but not as well as a conductor. semiconductor
one of the elements of Group one of the periodic table. alkalimetal
one of the elements of group two of the periodic table. alkaline earth metal
one of the metals that can use the inner shell before using the outer shell to bond. transition metal
one of the elements of group seventeen the periodic table. halogen
an unreactive element of group eighteen of the periodic table. noble gas
the SI base unit used to measure the amount of a substance whos number of particles is the same as the number of atoms of carbon in 12g of carbon. mole
equals 6.02x10; the number of particles in 1 mol. avogadro's constant

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
