QuestionAnswer
Atoms make up all things around us
Parts of an atom include the electrons, protons, neutrons
Protons +
Neutrons no charge
Electrons -
Charges are attracted to ___ Opposites
There are over ___ different atoms 100
__ elements are found in nature 91
Molecule is a group of two or more atoms held together by very strong chemical bonds
Compounds are pure substances made up of two or more different elements that are chemically joined.
Mixtures are combined physically
Heterogeneous mixtures are mixtures of substances that are not distributed evenly throughout
Homogeneous mixtures are mixtures of substances that are evenly distributed throughout
Solution is a special kind of homogeneous mixture in which one substance is completely dissolved in another substance.
Periodic table of the elements presents and organizes information about all the elements
Atomic number identifies the number of protons in the nucleus of one atom of an element.
Atomic mass is the number of protons and neutrons added together
Period is each horizontal row in the Table of Elements
Group or family is a vertical column in the Table of Elements
Alkali Metals/Group 1 This group contains metals that are very reactive. They share the properties of being soft, silver-colored, shiny, and have a low density. They have 1 electron in the outer level.
Alkaline-Earth metals/Group 2 Metals that are reactive, but less reactive than alkali metals. They are silver-colored and more dense than alkali metals. They have 2 electrons in the outer level.
Transition Metals/Group 3-12 Metals that ave 1 or 2 electrons in the outer level . They are less reactive than alkaline metals. They are shiny, good conductors, have higher densities and melting points (except for mercury) than elements in groups 1 and 2
Boron Group/Group 13 One metalloid and four metals (Boron, alumininum, gallium, indium, thallium). At room temperature it is solid. It is very reactive. It has 3 electrons in the outer level.
Carbon Group/Group 14 One nonmetal, two metalloids, and two metals (Carbon, silicon, germanium, tin, lead). It is solid at room temperature. Its reactivity varies among the elements. There are 4 electrons in the outer level.
Nitrogen Group/Group 15 Two nonmetals, two metalloids, one metal (Nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, bismuth)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
