Viruses and Prions

QuestionAnswer
What genetic materials do viruses contain? RNA or DNA (NOT BOTH)
TAXONOMY TAXONOMY
What do family names end with? Virdae
What do genus names end with? Virus
What are virus species? A group of viruses sharing the same genetic info and niche(host)
What designates a subspecies? Number
TYPES OF VIRAL REPLICATION TYPES OF VIRAL REPLICATION
DNA SINGLE STRANDED VIRUSES DNA SINGLE STRANDED VIRUSES
RNA + strand replication RNA + STRAND REPLICATION
What is the + strand? The one that is transcriped; the mRNA
What is an example of a virus that replicates like the RNA + strand? Picornavirdea--family, poliovirus species
RNA, - strand RNA - STRAND
What is this strand? What can it do? Template for the protein, then copied by + strand,
What is an example of a virus in this replication method? Rabies virus/ rhabdovirdea
RNA DOUBLE STRANDED RNA DOUBLE STRANDED
What can it do that is unique to this sort of type? It can survive an insult
What is an example of this type of virus? Reovirdae
RNA CONTAINING VIRUSES RNA CONTAINING VIRUSES
+ STRAND VIRUSES + STRAND`
Give characteristics and abilities of the + strand replication: Makes a -- strand, makes more + strand, and translates proteins
-- STRAND VIRUSES -- STRAND
Give characteristics and abilities of the -- strand virus: Makes a + strand, more -- strands, and translates proteins
DOUBLE STRANDED VIRUSES DOUBLE STRANDED VIRUSES
An example of this type of virus is? Reovirus
What abilities and charcteristics does it have? Makes both + and - strand and translates new proteins
DNA VIRUSES DNA VIRUSES
What kind of polymerase do they use? our own DNA polymerase
What characteristics and abilities does it have? Transcribes RNA from viral DNA, Replicates viral DNA, makes protiens for capsid
Fig. 13.10; What does the ecplise period represent? Ecplise: no intact varion = no virus
PRIONSQ PRIONS
What are prions? Have no nucleic acids, just proteins
How predominant is it? We have tons of this stuff in this normal form
Give examples and characteristics, Proteinaceous infectious particle, B. Contains no DNA
What ability does it have? Changes normal protein into a misfolded one
What abilities do the altered proteins have? they can change other protiens and can be transmitted from one species to another

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
