Geographic Tools

Tools geographers use to travel around the world

QuestionAnswer
key A key is a set of symbols on a map that represents the physical features on the map.
compass rose A device used to determine geographic location on a map.
legend A caption that explains the meaning of specific illustrations on a map or chart.
Global Positioning System (GPS) An electronic system that uses satellites to determine the position of a vehicle, person, etc.
Geographic Informational System (GIS) A computer application used to store, view and analyze geographical information, especially maps.
ephemeris A table used to give coordinates of places in the sky at a number of specific times during a given period of time.
maps A representation of a a geographic area or region of the earth.
charts Charts provide useful geographical information to check positions without doing lots of calculations.
astrolabe A navigators tool that consists of metal plates and rules. One plate has information about the earth and one plate has information about the stars and planets.
magnetic compass A compass that consists of a floating magnetized metal disk marked N, E, S, W. It always turns to point north.
