Element | a pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means. |
Pure Substance | a substance in which there is only one type of particle. |
Characteristic Properties | each element has a unique set of properties that allows you to identify it. |
Metals | elements that are shiny and are good conductors of thermal energy and electric current. |
Non-metals | elements that are dull (not shiny), and that are poor conductors of thermal energy and electrical current. |
Metalloids | elements that have properties of both metals and non-metals. (also known as semi-conductors.) |
Compound | a pure substance composed of 2 or more elements that are chemically combined. |
Mixture | a combination of 2 or more chemicals that are not chemically combined. |
Solution | a mixture that appears to be a single substance, but is composed of 2 or more elements that are distributed evenly amongst each other. |
Solute | the substance that is dissolved |
Solvent | the substance in which the solute is dissolved. |
Soluble | able to dissolve |
Insoluble | unable to dissolve |
Heterogeneous mixture | a combination of substances in which different components are easily observed |
Homogenous mixture | a combination of substances in which the appearance and properties are the throughout |
Concentrate | a measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent |
Solubility | a given amount of solvent at a certain temperature |
Saturated | a solution that contains all the solute it can hold at a given temperature |
Unsaturated | contains less solute than it can hold at a given temperature |
Dilute | a solution with less solute than another |
Suspensions | a mixture in which particles of a mixture are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas but are large enough they settle out |
Colloid | a mixture in which particles are dispersed throughout but are not heavy enough to settle out |
