Element a pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means
Pure Substance a substance in which there is only one type of particle
Characteristic Properties a unique set of properties that allows you to identify a substance and does not depend on the amount present in the element
Metals elements that are shiny and good conductors of thermal energy and electric currents-malleable and ductile
Non-Metals elements that are dull and poor conductors of thermal energy and electric currents
Metalloids (semiconductors) are elements that have properties of both metals and non-metals
Compound a pure substance composed of two or more elements the are chemically combined
Mixture A combination of 2 or more substances that are NOT chemically combined
Solution A mix that appears to be a single substance but is composed of 2 or more substances that are distributed evenly amongst each other
Solute A substance that is dissolved
Solvent the substance in which the solute is dissolved
Soluble Able to dissolve in a solvent
Insoluble Unable to dissolve in a solvent
Homogeneous Mixture Have the same appearance and properties throughout the mixture
Heterogeneous mixture mixture composed of dissimilar components
Concentration a measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent.
Solubility the ability of one substance to dissolve in another a given temperature and pressure
Dilute Make a liquid thinner or weaker by adding water or another solvent to it.
Saturated Solution a solution that cannot dissolve any more solute under the given conditions
Unsaturated Solution a solution that contains less solute than a saturated solution does and that is able to dissolve additional solute
Suspension a mixture in which particles of a material are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas but are large enough that they can settle out.
Colloid A mixture in which particles are dispersed throughout but are not heavy enough to settle out.
