Question | Answer |
---|---|
Element | a pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means |
Pure Substance | a substance in which there is only one type of particle |
Characteristic Properties | a unique set of properties that allows you to identify a substance and does not depend on the amount present in the element |
Metals | elements that are shiny and good conductors of thermal energy and electric currents-malleable and ductile |
Non-Metals | elements that are dull and poor conductors of thermal energy and electric currents |
Metalloids | (semiconductors) are elements that have properties of both metals and non-metals |
Compound | a pure substance composed of two or more elements the are chemically combined |
Mixture | A combination of 2 or more substances that are NOT chemically combined |
Solution | A mix that appears to be a single substance but is composed of 2 or more substances that are distributed evenly amongst each other |
Solute | A substance that is dissolved |
Solvent | the substance in which the solute is dissolved |
Soluble | Able to dissolve in a solvent |
Insoluble | Unable to dissolve in a solvent |
Homogeneous Mixture | Have the same appearance and properties throughout the mixture |
Heterogeneous mixture | mixture composed of dissimilar components |
Concentration | a measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent. |
Solubility | the ability of one substance to dissolve in another a given temperature and pressure |
Dilute | Make a liquid thinner or weaker by adding water or another solvent to it. |
Saturated Solution | a solution that cannot dissolve any more solute under the given conditions |
Unsaturated Solution | a solution that contains less solute than a saturated solution does and that is able to dissolve additional solute |
Suspension | a mixture in which particles of a material are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas but are large enough that they can settle out. |
Colloid | A mixture in which particles are dispersed throughout but are not heavy enough to settle out. |
