Element A pure substance that cannot be separated by physical or chemical means
Pure substance A substance in which there is only one type of particle
Characteristic properties A property of a substance that is always the same
Metals Elements that are shiny and are good conductors of thermal energy and electric currents
Non-metals Elements that are dull and are poor conductors of thermal energy and electric current
Metalloids Elements that have properties of both metals and non-metals
Compound A pure substance composed of two or more elements
Mixture Combination of two or more substances that aren’t chemically combined
Solution Mixture that appears to be a substance
Solute A substance that is dissolved in a solvent
Solvent A substance in which the solute is dissolved
Soluble Soluble:
Insoluble Unable to dissolve
Homogeneous mixture A combination of substances in which appearance and properties are the same throughout.
Heterogeneous Mixture A combination of substances in which different components are easily observed.
Concentration Is a measure of the amount of solute dissolved into a solvent.
Solubility The amount of solute needed to make a saturated solution using a given amount of solvent at a certain temperature
Dilute Does not contain as much solvent or is less solute than other substances.
Saturated Solution A solution that conations all the solute it can hold at a given time.
Unsaturated solution: A solution that does not contain all the solute it can hold at a given time.
Suspension A mixture in which particles of a material are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas but are large enough that they settle out.
Colloids A mixture in which particles are dispersed throughout but are not heavy enough to settle out.
