Element | A pure substance that cannot be separated by physical or chemical means |
Pure substance | A substance in which there is only one type of particle |
Characteristic properties | A property of a substance that is always the same |
Metals | Elements that are shiny and are good conductors of thermal energy and electric currents |
Non-metals | Elements that are dull and are poor conductors of thermal energy and electric current |
Metalloids | Elements that have properties of both metals and non-metals |
Compound | A pure substance composed of two or more elements |
Mixture | Combination of two or more substances that aren’t chemically combined |
Solution | Mixture that appears to be a substance |
Solute | A substance that is dissolved in a solvent |
Solvent | A substance in which the solute is dissolved |
Soluble | Soluble: |
Insoluble | Unable to dissolve |
Homogeneous mixture | A combination of substances in which appearance and properties are the same throughout. |
Heterogeneous Mixture | A combination of substances in which different components are easily observed. |
Concentration | Is a measure of the amount of solute dissolved into a solvent. |
Solubility | The amount of solute needed to make a saturated solution using a given amount of solvent at a certain temperature |
Dilute | Does not contain as much solvent or is less solute than other substances. |
Saturated Solution | A solution that conations all the solute it can hold at a given time. |
Unsaturated solution: | A solution that does not contain all the solute it can hold at a given time. |
Suspension | A mixture in which particles of a material are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas but are large enough that they settle out. |
Colloids | A mixture in which particles are dispersed throughout but are not heavy enough to settle out. |
