Metals | Elements that are shiny and are good conductors of thermal energy and electric current. |
Nonmetals | Elements that are dull and poor conductors of thermal energy and electric current |
Metalloids | Elements that have properties of both metals and nonmetals; Semiconductors |
Compound | A pure substance composed of two or more element that are chemically combined |
Mixture | A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined |
Solution | A mixture that appears to be a single substance bit is composed of particles of two or more substances that are distributed evenly amongst each other |
Solute | The substance that is dissolved |
Solvent | The substance in which the solute is dissolved |
Soluble | Ability to dissolve |
Insoluble | Unable to dissolve |
Homogeneous Mixture | A combination of substances in which the appearance and properties are the same through out |
Heterogeneous Mixture | A combination of substances in which different compounds are easily observed |
Concentration | The measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent |
Solubility | The amount of solute needed to make a solution using a given amount of a solvent at a certain temperature |
Dilute | Less than a concentration |
Saturated Solution | A solution that contains all the solute it can hold |
Unsaturated Solution | A solution that contains less than it can hold |
Suspension | A mixture in which particles are dispersed through a liquid or gas but are large enough that they settle out |
Colloids | A mixture in which the particles are dispersed though not heavy enough to settle out |
