Immunology Cytokines

Cytokines for exam

QuestionAnswer
IL-1 is secreted by? Monocytes/activated macrophages
IL-2 is secreted by? CD4+ T-cells (Th-1)
IL-4 is secreted by? CD4+ T-cells (Th-2)
IL-5 is secreted by? Th-2
IL-6 is secreted by? T cells (Th-2) and macrophages
IL-7 is secreted by? Hassel Corpuscles, Thymic cortical epithelial cells, Bone Marrow Stromal
IL-8 is secreted by? Activated macrophages
IL-12 is secreted by? Activated macrophages
IL-13 is secreted by? TH-2
IFN-alpha is secreted by? All cells; higher levels in monocytes and fibroblasts
IFN-Beta is secreted by? All cells; higher levels in monocytes and fibroblasts
IFN-Gamma is secreted by? All cells but main source are T cells (CD4 Th1) and NK cells
TNFα is secreted by? Many cell types especially activated macrophages
TNFβ is secreted by? T (Th-1)and B cells
CC are secreted by? Many cell types (neutrophils, B and T cells, etc)
CXC are secreted by? Many cell types (neutrophils, B and T cells, etc)
Effects of IL-1? Fever/pyrogen, Induction of adhesion proteins & APCs, Increase vascular permeability, Autocrine (on macrophage and monocytes), T-cell activation & helps it secrete IL2, B cell proliferation
Effects of IL-2? Autocrine (on CD4), “Growth factor” of various cells (need Ag), Prolif/diff of T,B, or NK cells, Part of inflammatory subset secreted by Th1
Effects of IL-4? Critical for B cell activation and prolif, Class switching (IgM to IgG,A,E..), Induces Naïve CD4+ into Th-2, Part of helper subset secreted by Th2
Effects of IL-5? Part of helper subset secreted by Th2, Important for the activation of eosinophils
Effects of IL-6? Fever, B-cell proliferation, Part of helper subset secreted by Th2, Helps produce MBP
Effects of IL-7? T/B cell prolif during development, Needed in culture systems (outside Thymus)
Effects of IL-8? Chemotactic for neutrophils, Increase vascular permeability
Effects of IL-10? Induces Naïve CD4+ into Th-2
Effects of IL-12? Activates NK cells, Induces Naïve CD4+ into Th-1
Effects of IL-13? B-cell proliferation, Part of helper subset secreted by Th2
Effects of IFN-alpha? Induce antiviral state (all), Activate NK cells (all)
Effects of IFN-Beta? Induce antiviral state (all), Activate NK cells (all)
Effects of IFN-gamma? Induce antiviral state (all), Activate NK cells (all), Stimulate macrophage activation, Class switching IgG (subclass 2 &3), Part of inflammatory subset secreted by Th1
Effects of TNFα? Fever, Chemotactic, Increase vascular permeability, Directly kill tumor cells, Activate moncytes/macrophages, Expression of adhesion molecules
Effects of TNFβ? Directly kill tumor cells, Activate moncytes/macrophages, Expression of adhesion molecules, Part of inflammatory subset secreted by Th1
Effects of TGFβ? Induces Naïve CD4+ into Th-1, a T-cell factor
Effects of CC? Attract monocytes and T cells
Effects of CXC? Attract neutrophils (same as IL8)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
