Human Body Systems ch.1

QuestionAnswer
Integumentary Components: skin, hair nails, sweat and oil glands. Functions: water proofs the body, protects and cushions tissue, excretion, synthesizes vitamin D, location of cutaneous nerve.
Skeletal Components: bones, cartilage, ligaments, joints. Functions: protects and supposts body organs, provides site for muscle attachment, hematopoiesis, stores minerals.
Muscular Components: skeletal muscles. Functions: allows locomotion, maintains posture, produces heat.
Nervous Components: brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sensory receptors. Functions: fast acting control system, responds to external/internal stimuli.
Endocrine COmponents: (endocrine glands) pineal gland, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, thymus gland, adrenal gland, pancreas, testis (male), ovary (female). Functions: slow acting control system, secrets hormones for growth, reproduction, metabolism.
Cardiovascular Components: heart and blood vessels. Functions: transports materials in boby by blood pumped by heart - oxygen, nutrients, hormones, carbon dioxide, waste.
Lymphatic Components: lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils. Functions: return fluid leaked by the blood and returns it to the blood vessels, disposes of debris, involved in immunity.
Respiratory Components: nasal passages, pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box), trachea (windpipe), bronchi, lungs. Functions: keeps blood supplied with oxygen, removes carbon dioxide.
Digestive Components: (GI track) oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small/large intestines, rectum, anus. Function: breaks down food, delivers, nutrients to blood, eliminates indigestible material.
Urinary Components: kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra. Functions: eliminates nitrogenous waste, maintains acid-base balance (pH), regulates body's waste and electrolyte (salt) balance.
Reproductive Components: (male) testis, penis, glands. (female) ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina. Functions: produce offspring
