Review of 5th grade math terms

QuestionAnswer
Factor An integer that divides evenly into another integer. (2X6=12; 2 and 6 are factors of 12)
Product The result of multiplication. (factor X factor = product)
Integer Whole numbers and their opposites (-2, -1, 0, 1, 2)
Divide To separate into even groups
Multiply The operation of repeated addition (4X3 is the same as 4+4+4)
Quotient The result of division (dividend/divisor = quotient)
Prime Number A number that has exactly two different positive factors, itself and one. (7, 13, 23, etc.)
Composite Number A number that has more than two factors (8 has 4 factors: 1X8;2X4)
Common Factor A number that is a factor of two or more numbers (1,2,3, and 6 are common factors of 18 and 24)
Mathematics The study of the measurement, properties, and relationships of quantities and sets, using numbers and symbols
Associative Property of Multiplication The product stays the same when the grouping of factors is changed. (6X4)X2 is the same as 6X(4X2)
Commutative Property of Multiplication The product stays the same when the order of the factors is changed. (8X5=5X8)
Prime Factorization A way to write a number as the product of prime factors. The prime factorization of 12 is 2X2X3.
