# BAS 01 Word Roots

This is the basic meaning of any word combining form also called the word root, radical or stem
Word roots consist of: combining forms, prefixes and suffixes
When adding a suffix you will drop the vowel on the combining form if: The suffix begins with a vowel. i.e. bronch/o + -itis = Bronchitis
When adding a suffix that starts with a consonant to a combining form you will keep the combining vowel i.e. leuk/o + -cyte = leukocyte
erythr/o + -cyte erythrocyte - red blood cell
oste/o + -cyte osteocyte - bone cell
When you form a word by connecting combining forms you will keep the combining vowel. ot/o + rhin/o + laryng/o + logy = otorhinolaryngology
rhin/o + -itis rhinitis - inflammed nose
bronch/o + -itis bronchitis - bronchus inflammation
hemat/o + -logy hematology - Study of blood
colon/o + scopy colonoscopy - view the colon with an instrument.
immun/o + -logy immunology - study of the lymphatic and blood
arteri/o + scler/o + -sis arteriosclerosis - hardening of the arteries
audi/o + -logy audiology - study of hearting/sounc
oste/o + algia ostealgia - bone pain
cardi/o + -logy cardiology - study of the heart.
a- + chrom/o + -ia achromia - without color
dys- + hydr/o + -sis dyshydrosis - malfunction of sweat glands
intra- + arteri/o + -al intraarterial - inside an artery
oste/o + myel/o + -itis osteomyelitis - inflammation of the bone marrow
my/o + cardi/o + -al myocardial - pertaining to the heart muscle.
neur/o + -algia neuralgia
erythr/o + -cyte erythrocyte - red blood cell
cyt/o + -sis cytosis - a cell condition
per- + cutane/o + -ous percutaneous - through the skin
ecto- + derm/o ectoderm - outside skin
inter- + cost/o + -al intercostal - between the ribs
tachy- + cardi/o + -ia tachycardia - Fast heart ( over 100 beats / minute)
brady- + cardi/o + -ia bradycardia - slow heart ( less than 60 beats / minute)
auto- + -lysis autolysis - condition in which a cell breaks open spontaneously.
ec- + tom/o + -y ectomy - to cut out
dys- + ur/o + -ia dysuria - painful urination
epi- + dur/o + -al epidural - membrane around the brain
a- + -pnea apnea - temporary absence of breathing
a- + chrom/o + -ia without color
hepat/o + -megaly hepatomegaly - enlarged liver
dys- + -lexia dyslexia - bad reading (trouble reading words)
endo + cardi/o + -logy endocardiology - study of the inside of the heart.
intra- + crani/o + -ial intracranial
myo- + cardi/o + -ium myocardium - muscle layer of the heart
oste/o + -itis osteitis - bone inflammation
arthr/o + -centesis arthrocentesis - removing fluid from a joint
col/o + -stomy colostomy - opening made in the colon
phleb/o + -tomy phlebotomy - cutting of a vein ( term used to describe drawing blood)
rhin/o + -plasty rhinoplasty - surgical repair of the nose
lith/o + tripsy lithotripsy - stone crushing. Term used to describe an ultrasound procedure to remove gallstones or kidney stones.
cephal/o + -algia cephalalgia - headache
dermat/o + -logist dermatologist - doctor specializing in skin treatment
therm/o + -meter thermometer - instrument that measures heat
neur/o + -pathy neuropathy - disease of the nervous system
dys- + -phagia dysphagia - difficulty eating
hemo- + -philia hemophilia - disease in which a person cannot stop bleeding
a- + -trophy absence of development. Usually applied to a muscle condition in which muscle degrades due to lack of use.
a- + -phasia aphasia - absence of speaking
ventral towards the front. Same as anterior

lateral to the side
medial towards the mid-line
