# BAS 01 Word Roots

This is the basic meaning of any word | combining form also called the word root, radical or stem |
Word roots consist of: | combining forms, prefixes and suffixes |
When adding a suffix you will drop the vowel on the combining form if: | The suffix begins with a vowel. i.e. bronch/o + -itis = Bronchitis |
When adding a suffix that starts with a consonant to a combining form you will | keep the combining vowel i.e. leuk/o + -cyte = leukocyte |
erythr/o + -cyte | erythrocyte - red blood cell |
oste/o + -cyte | osteocyte - bone cell |
When you form a word by connecting combining forms you will keep the combining vowel. | ot/o + rhin/o + laryng/o + logy = otorhinolaryngology |
rhin/o + -itis | rhinitis - inflammed nose |
bronch/o + -itis | bronchitis - bronchus inflammation |
hemat/o + -logy | hematology - Study of blood |
colon/o + scopy | colonoscopy - view the colon with an instrument. |
immun/o + -logy | immunology - study of the lymphatic and blood |
arteri/o + scler/o + -sis | arteriosclerosis - hardening of the arteries |
audi/o + -logy | audiology - study of hearting/sounc |
oste/o + algia | ostealgia - bone pain |
cardi/o + -logy | cardiology - study of the heart. |

lith/o + tripsy | lithotripsy - stone crushing. Term used to describe an ultrasound procedure to remove gallstones or kidney stones. |

hemo- + -philia | hemophilia - disease in which a person cannot stop bleeding |
a- + -trophy | absence of development. Usually applied to a muscle condition in which muscle degrades due to lack of use. |
