The First People Vocab.

prehistory Historians call this the time before there was writing.
hominid An early ancestor of humans.
Louis Leakey He found hominid remains that he called Homo habilis, or "handy man."
Homo erectus "upright man."
tool It is any handheld object that has been modified to help a person accomplish a task.
Paleolithic (pay-lee-uh-li-thik) Era The first part of the Stone Age, or Old Stone Age.
society It is a community of people who share a common culture.
hunter-gatherers People who hunt animals and gather wild plants, seeds, fruits, and nuts to survive.
Homo Sapians Name means "wise man" Appeared in Africa about 200,000 years ago.They migrated around the world, created fire and tools, and developed language.
Australopithecus Name means "southern ape". appeared in Africa about 4-5 millions years ago. stood upright and walked on two legs. Brain was 1/3 the size of modern humans.
Homo Habilis Name means "handy man" appeared in Africa about 2.4 million years ago. used stone tools for chopping and scrapping. Brain was 1/2 the size of modern humans.
Donald Johanson He discovered the bones of Lucy, an early hominid that lived more than 3 million years ago.
Mary Leaky She found some of the earliest ancestors of humans in Olduvai Gorge.
Ancestor It is a relative who lived in the past.
