| solid | tightly compacted state of matter |
| liquid | loosely joined state of matter |
| gas | state of matter having no shape or set volume |
| physical properties | a property that can be observed without performing a chemical transformation of that substance |
| chemical properties | how a substance is put together on the chemical level |
| physical change | changing a substance without changing its chemical makeup |
| chemical change | a process that involves the formation or breaking of chemical bonds |
| mixture | a physical combination of different substances |
| alloy | a substance that contains a mixture of elements and has metallic properties |
| pure substance | a substance with constant composition |
| homogeneous mixture | a mixture in which the components are uniformily distributed |
