Matter Unit Vocab

Matter Unit Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
atom The smallest particle of an element.
element A substance that is made up of only one type of matter. Atoms of one element are all alike.
molecule The smallest whole part of a compound. Atoms of elements can also be grouped to form a molecule.
compound A substance made when two or more elements are joined together and lose their properties.
solid A phase of matter that has a definite shape and definite size. Particles in a solid are tightly packed and vibrate slightly. The particles are arranged in order.
liquid A phase of matter that takes up a definite amount of space but has no definite shape. Particles in a liquid are close together and slide past each other. The particles are not arranged in order.
gas A phase of matter that does not take up a definite amount of space and has no definite shape. Particles in a gas are moving very fast and in all directions.
mixture Two or more types of matter that are mixed together but keep their own properties. Matter in a mixture is not evenly distributed.
solution Mixing of two or more types of matter where one substance dissolves (mixes evenly) in the other substance(s). Each keeps its own properties.
proton Positively charged particles in the center (nucleus) of the atom. Each element has a different numbers of protons than any other element.
neutron Particles in the center (nucleus) of the atom. They have no charge. Each element has a different number of neutrons than any other element.
electrons Negatively charged particles that move around the center of the atom in orbital shells. Each element has a different number of electrons than any other element.
nanotechnology The technology of manipulating matter at the atomic level to create products.
matter Anything that has mass (made of particles), takes up space, and cannot be created or destroyed.
temperature The measure of heat energy present.
boiling point The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas.
freezing point The temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid.
evaporation The process of a liquid changing to a gas.
condensation The process of a gas changing to a liquid.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
